How to Mix Concrete in a Bucket
Step-by-step guide for small concrete batches using a bucket, drill, and paddle mixer.
What You Need
- ✓5-Gallon Plastic Bucket (Clean)
- ✓Heavy Duty Corded Drill (1/2" Chuck)
- ✓Mixing Paddle Attachment
- ✓Water Measuring Cup
- ✓Dust Mask & Safety Glasses
- ✓Rubber Gloves
Step-by-Step Instructions
Measure Your Water First
Most 60lb bags need about 2-3 quarts of water. Pour about 75% of the recommended water into the bucket FIRST. This prevents dry powder from sticking to the bottom corners.
Add Concrete Mix Slowly
Pour about half of the bag into the water. Wear your mask! The dust will puff up. Start drilling at low speed to wet the powder without splashing.
Mix and Add More
Add the rest of the mix. Move the paddle up and down (plunging motion) and scrape the sides. Add the remaining water sparingly until you reach a peanut butter consistency.
Pour Immediately
You have about 45-60 minutes before it sets, but it's easiest to pour right away. Clean your bucket and paddle immediately with a hose—once it hardens, the bucket is ruined.
Don't Burn Your Drill!
Standard cordless drills often lack the torque for concrete and can burn out their motors. Use a powerful corded drill or a dedicated mixing drill.
Mixing More than 2 Bags?
Bucket mixing is hard work for larger projects. A mini mixer pays for itself in just one weekend project.
